A statement issued from President Eroglu’s office on Tuesday says that Greek Cypriot allegations that the Turkish Cypriot side is demanding the establishment of two independent sovereign states in order to solve the Cyprus problem is “completely groundless”.
The statement goes on to say that “the Turkish Cypriot side clearly notes that it is committed to a solution on the basis of a bi-communal, bi-zonal federation with political equality as defined by the UN Security Council’s relevant resolutions, in the way it is included in the drafts of the joint statement. Actually, all the parameters and the convergences to which the Turkish Cypriot side continues to be committed are based on such a solution”.
The statement also argues that the time has come for negotiations to begin unconditionally and to use the window of opportunity for reaching a solution without delay. In addition, it says that the Turkish Cypriots expect the Greek Cypriot side to adopt a constructive and solution-oriented approach.
It concludes that the Greek Cypriot side blocks all the exercises on agreement over a joint statement, “by trying to change the established UN parameters”.
