Presidential Spokesman Baris Burcu referring to the cancelled leaders’ meeting for Thursday, has said that, “We hope that the necessary steps will be taken soon and a new meeting date will be set.”
The Turkish Cypriot side, in light of the current developments, had conveyed its views and requests to the relevant parties, said Burcu.
President Akinci’s spokesman said that on Tuesday, President Akinci had told the UN Secretary General’s Special Representative Elizabeth Spehar that President Anastasiades had taken insufficient steps to remedy the problem [created by the vote taken by the south Cyprus parliament to commemorate ‘Enosis Day’ in secondary schools.]
Although President Anastasiades had said that the vote was untimely and wrong, he said it was not material to the Cyprus negotiations and that he could not interfere with the parliamentary process.
Pointing out that the Turkish Cypriot side had highlighted the issue through diplomatic channels and public statements, Burcu expressed the hope that the Greek Cypriot leader would do what was necessary to overcome this problem.
