Greece needs to be more realistic about the guarantees issue

The most realistic thing is peace. Greece should focus on the security issue on the axis of peace policies. Greece’s approach on the issue of guarantees and security should be directed towards ‘a solution that will abolish the concerns of both people on security and should be found’. Greece’s stance on the guarantees issue is not a realistic one. Greece and [Prime Minister] Tsipras have a great duty to find a formula that will safeguard the sense of security among the two peoples”, leader of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP) Tufan Erhurman has said.

Addressing a conference titled “The peace policies of the regional triangle Cyprus, Turkey and Greece” at the Near East University, Erhurman said that a Cyprus settlement would benefit everyone. Relations between Greek and Turkish Cypriots and Greece and Turkey would be normalised. He emphasised that they should see the bigger picture. What mattered was how the Cyprus legacy would affect this triangle in 20-30 years’ time.

Greece’s cooperation would be needed at the Geneva conference in January, he said. The CTP leader added that Turkey should also considered the decades to come and not just focus on the next six months.

Erhurman concluded by saying that it is understood that the sooner a Cyprus settlement is achieved, then the faster the economic interests will materialise for both sides and security will be safeguarded more quickly in the region.
