While tens of thousands of protesters fill Taksim Square in Istanbul every night; police are absent and the atmosphere is peaceful.
However in Ankara, Turkish police have fired tear gas and water cannon at crowds who joined in the mass demonstrations. These were mainly union members who filled the central Kizilay square in the Turkish capital on Wednesday, urging Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan to resign.
The Confederation of Progressive Trade Unions (DISK), the Public Workers Unions Confederation (KESK), the Turkish Doctors’ Union (TTB) and the Union of Chambers of Turkish Engineers and Architects (TMMOB) as well as members of left-wing political parties and members of civil society organizations were all present at the Kizilay square.
Prime Minister Erdogan is on his way back from his tour of North African countries. He will decide on the government’s response to the continuing protests.
In the meantime, Deputy Prime Minister Bulent Arinc has been left in charge in a bid to reduce the tension. Yesterday he met with protesters’ representatives and listened to their demands.
