Chief Turkish Cypriot negotiator, Kudret Ozersay has said that “some concrete steps may be taken in the road leading to the solution” in Cyprus and that “there will be important developments”.
Speaking from New York to Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Halkin Sesi’, Ozersay said that certain steps were imminent as regards the comprehensive solution and that cooperation between both sides on certain issues will boost their economies.
He also contended that in view of the recent developments in Ukraine, Europe, which is dependent on Russia for gas, will be more amenable on the issue of bringing the Eastern Mediterranean’s energy resources to international markets, inevitably causing the re-evaluation of the situation in Cyprus.
Ozersay went on and argued that: “The need for regional stability had been recognised despite long standing negotiations which have brought no results and no change to the current status quo, but the latest developments show that this should change now. It is very important to overcome this lengthy stagnation, which has stifled the Turkish Cypriots and left them at a dead-end as far as their status is concerned. The ideal way of solving this is a comprehensive solution. Only by taking concrete steps will a solution be reached. We believe that important developments will soon emerge on these issues”.
Following a meeting with officials from the US State Department in Washington, Ozersay met with Mr Smart, who according to the paper is President Obama’s advisor, and afterwards he departed again for New York, where he is discussing the latest developments with the Ambassadors of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council.
