Today is World Water Day and this year’s theme is “Water and Energy”, currently the most pressing issues in the world today, says Green Peace Movement Chairman Dogan Sahir.
He says that World Water Day gives the opportunity to consider how the TRNC manages its water supplies.
Possibly, in an oblique reference to the Century Project, Sahir points out that there needs to be a policy which adopts a sustainable water management plan. For example, he points out that 60% of rainwater in the TRNC flows into the sea. He adds that construction and land management in the North is haphazard, aimless, mismanaged and contributes to groundwater pollution.
A considered approach to water management, and better care of the environment and sensible investment, is key to the future of the TRNC’s water supplies, Sahir says.
