Cyprus negotiators meet officials in Athens and Ankara

The two chief negotiators, Andreas Mavroyiannis for the Greek Cypriots and Kudret Ozersay for the Turkish Cypriots, are holding meetings in Ankara and Athens respectively on the Cyprus problem and the resumption of the UN backed negotiations.

Andreas Mavroyiannis will be meeting in Ankara with the Undersecretary for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Feridun H. Sinirlioglu while Kudret Ozersay is expected to meet the Secretary General of the Greek Foreign Ministry, Ambassador Anastassis Mitsialis.

Ozersay stated that it will be the first time in 55 years that a Turkish Cypriot negotiator will have visited Athens. He added that the last one who visited Greece, was the late former Turkish Cypriot President Rauf Denktas in 1959 as the leader of of the Turkish Cypriot community. Ozersay added that Archbishop Makarios was the last Greek Cypriot leader to visit Ankara on November 22-26, 1962 as President of the Republic of Cyprus.

Sources say that there will be no statements issued following those meetings.
