The TRNC’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a statement declaring that by making no reference to the Turkish Cypriots and Turkey, the UK has shown favour to the Greek Cypriots and injustice to the Turkish Cypriots via the signed agreement between the UK and South Cyprus on the future of the British Sovereign bases.

It reminds everyone that both communities are in the middle of ongoing efforts to restart the Cyprus negotiations.

The statement goes on to say that the agreement contravenes international agreements related to Cyprus and that action was being taken to overturn this ‘fait accompli’.

According to the written statement, it is indisputably clear that the British Sovereign Base Areas in Cyprus are part of an indivisible package of provisions concerning the Sovereign Base Areas set out in the Treaty of Establishment of the Republic of Cyprus in 1960. For this reason, the written statement claims that any change regarding the British Sovereign Base Areas without the briefing and approval of all parties to the 1960 Treaty such as Turkey, Greece, Britain, the Turkish Cypriot and the Greek Cypriot sides is a violation against the 1960 agreements and the Vienna Convention on the Law of Treaties of 1969.
