UN Secretary Ban Ki-moon, has issued a report which outlines the current stage of the Cyprus negotiations. Meanwhile the extension of the United Nations Peace Keeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) mandate points the way to the resumption of peace talks.

According to North Cyprus daily, ‘Kibris’, a draft of the report, which has been viewed by both sides, includes the developments made between the period between 21st June-15th December.

‘Kibris’ says that Ban has suggested that it would be a positive step to focus on encouraging the two communities to come together in the field of sports, the economy and culture.

Ban thinks that this would strengthen ties between the two sides and would answer the concerns of the Turkish Cypriots about their isolation.

He also calls on both communities to cooperate over the issue of hydrocarbon explorations in Cyprus’ EEZ.

The report makes no reference to the political aspect of the problem. ‘Kibris’ says that diplomatic sources say that this indicates that the political report will be submitted later by the UNSG’s special advisor to Cyprus, Alexander Downer and explains why the negotiations cannot resume for the time being.
