Following our report on Saturday that a jack up drilling rig was seen off the coast near Kyrenia harbour, Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Kibrisli’ claims today that secret drilling tests are planned offshore North Cyprus.
The tests will be performed by drilling rig ‘GSP Jupiter’ accompanied by the Turkish seismic vessel ‘Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha’.
The seismic vessel’s last reported position, at 02.00 this morning was just off the south coast of the Karpasian Panhandle.
If these reports are accurate, then Turkish Petroleum Company (TPAO) who had already hired drilling rig ‘Jupiter’ for test drilling in the Black Sea in April, will be performing the test drills.
The reports according to “reliable sources”, state that work is likely to begin within the next few days.
It had been reported in September that the Turkish Energy Minister, Taner Yildiz had said that there were plans to perform test drills for gas around the island of Cyprus with the approval of Turkish Prime Minister, Erdogan.
