The Animal Rights Act was passed on March 4th 2013 in the TRNC. The act prohibits fights between animals or the organisation or promotion of such fights. However, newspapers in Turkey have published an interview with Uysal Aktay of Karakuyu village in Turkey, who claims that he is breeding fighting cocks.
He states that every year there is a cock fighting event in the TRNC and that he uses the winners to breed fighting cocks. He also claims that he has been doing this for the past fifteen years.
Mr Aktay says that, using a Turkish soldier as an intermediary, he has been able to export his chicks to the TRNC. Apparently his champion cockerels fetch around TL 20,000 each.
The Animal Rights Act imposes a penalty of up to six times the minimum wage as a penalty and up to 12 months in jail.
