Greek Cypriot newspaper ‘Politis’ points out in an article, that increasing numbers of Greek Cypriots are using Ercan airport and that tourists coming into Cyprus prefer it because of lower airport taxes.
This trend is worrying for the economy of the South, it says and also is making a substantial dent in the profits of Larnaca airport operators.
During 2012 twice as many passengers used Greek Cypriot airports (5.1 million) rather than Ercan (2.6 million). However, these trends are changing.
For the first four months of this year, Ercan saw 821,000 passengers, up from 790,000 for the same period last year.
In contrast the number of passengers using Larnaca airport was 866,000 down 20% from last year.
