The education system in the TRNC is failing its pupils because it is filled with reactionary dogma and religious fanaticism disseminated by Turkey’s ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP).
Addressing the 41st General Assembly of KTOS, Semen Saygun, chairperson of the Turkish Cypriot Primary School Teachers’ Union (KTOS) noted that this is why they should unite to resist these changes from the more secular model. She pointed out that that the agreements made with Ankara are leading the Turkish Cypriots towards annihilation. Saygun was especially critical of the protocol signed by the government permitting the import of labour from Turkey to the TRNC.
Addressing the same meeting, Erdogan Sorakin, general secretary of the Republican Turkish Party (CTP), said that the only solution for the Cyprus problem is a federal Cyprus and no other outcome than this would be successful. He argued that the country is being plundered, mistakes are made in education and money is distributed to companies supporting the TRNC government.
Moreover, Cemal Ozyigit, chairman of the Social Democracy Party (TDP), also said that the country is being plundered and that the administration distributes land to certain circles. He noted that a tutelage regime exists in the North, the Turkish Cypriots have no say and they cannot govern themselves.
