UN Special Advisor for Cyprus Espen Barth Eide is travelling to Athens today to meet the Greek Foreign Minister, Nicos Kotzias. Kotzias invited the UN envoy to discuss recent developments in the Cyprus negotiations.
On Tuesday, Eide will go to Ankara to hold contacts at the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Wednesday.
Eide issued a written statement on Friday, saying that despite concerted efforts, the two Cypriot community leaders could find no common ground regarding their differences on how to conduct a second Cyprus Conference in Geneva.
“Without a prospect for common ground, there is no basis for continuing this shuttle diplomacy,” he said.
On the same day, President Nicos Anastasiades said that he regretted the Turkish Cypriot leader’s decision not to accept his proposal for a joint meeting to be held Monday.
“It is with great regret that I was informed by Mr Espen Barth Eide about the decision of the Turkish Cypriot leader not to accept the compromised proposal I made through him, but also his refusal to accept the invitation addressed by Mr Eide for a joint meeting to be held next Monday,” Anastasiades said.
