Now is the time to make a decision, President Mustafa Akıncı said after his meeting with President Nicos Anastasiades in the UN buffer zone on Thursday evening.
During the four hour meeting, the two Cypriot community leaders had been evaluating the work they have undertaken in the Cyprus talks, he said. Chief negotiators Andreas Mavroyiannis and Ozdil Nami handed over the work they had done on the property issue.
Instructions had been given to the negotiators on what they should focus on until the next meeting to be held on 17 May. Up until that date, they will hold a number of meetings and work intensively Akıncı said.
President Akıncı reminded that the second year of the negotiations has been completed. Many committees have worked in many areas during this period.
Much hard work had been put into the negotiations and much ground had been covered, some successfully, some less so, he said. It was time to make a decision about whether they will reach a conclusion.
Recognising that the resolution of the Turkish Cypriot side is well known and had been proved many times, President Akıncı underlined the importance of policy determination and political will and the need to demonstrate those things.
The next few weeks, he said, would be critical.
