Turkey’s seismic and drilling operations have officially started in the Mediterranean, Turkish energy minister Berat Albayrak.
Turkey will perform 3D seismic searches using the seismic survey vessel ‘Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha’ Ship in the first stage. Seismic studies will then be continued with the ‘Oruç Reis’ ship.
Exploratory drilling will begin using a new vessel commissioned by Turkey.
Turkey has already conducted seismic work in the Mediterranean in accordance with its the rights in international law. Albayrak described the new period as an “intensive and holistic exploration and drilling strategy”. For the first time in this strategy, a wide range of field seismic studies will be carried out on the Mediterranean coasts. Among the areas to be surveyed in this framework will be the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC).
Albayrak, who had previously explained the exploration and drilling strategy within the framework of the National Energy and Mining Strategy, said:
“We will start at least two drilling and drilling stages a year. We have a lot of hope here, I believe we will get positive results. This is a long-term journey, but as I said, how much infrastructure you have in your framework of science is relevant, if you put the right steps in the right place.”
Albayrak also stressed that all of Turkey’s work is within the international legal framework and that it will continue to be so.
