South’s parliament votes to revoke ‘Enosis Day’ bill

The South Cyprus parliament, on Friday, passed through legislation undoing a bill for secondary schools to commemorate the 1950’s Enosis plebiscite. The original vote brought the Cyprus talks to a halt in mid-February.

The vote was 30 in favour and 20 against out 50 of 56 MPs being present. Ruling Disy party pushed the legislation through parliament but two Disy MPs, Andreas and Elena Kyprianou, voted against the amendment.

The amendment was backed by opposition party Akel.

A heated debate. which began at 9am with MPs exchanging accusations over patriotism or lack of it prompted a 10 minute recess at around 11 am.

House Speaker Demetris Syllouris asked everyone inside the plenum, except journalists and policemen, to leave the room.

The road in front of the parliament building was closed of as dozen of protestors supporting and against the bill, showed up outside the building.
