Protestors wait for South’s vote on repealing Enosis Day

The South Cyprus parliament, under pressure from the ruling DISY party, is today, expected to push through legislation undoing a bill commemorating an Enosis plebiscite in schools, despite the disapproval of some MPs.

The vote to establish the practise in secondary schools brought the Cyprus negotiations to a halt in mid-February.

Outside the South’s parliament building police, meanwhile, have closed off the road as groups of protestors, for and against the bill, showed up outside the House.

After the bill was passed, Turkish Cypriot leader Mustafa Akinci said he would not return to the negotiating table until the bill was rescinded.

Now hardline parties will also seek to pass a motion calling on President Anastasiades to urge Akinci, as a confidence-building measure, to remove the Turkish flag that illuminates the Besparmak Mountain range at night.

However, even if the talks resume as scheduled for 11th April, the mood on both sides has become less conciliatory, and hopes for a successful outcome have plummeted.
