Gönyeli Municipality announced that work on the new underpass project which began today was halted by the Highways Department.
Gönyeli Mayor Ahmet Yalçın Benli said, “I would like to invite the Department of Highways and all related units to cooperate with constructive communication to increase the quality of life of our people.”
In a statement, Mayor Benli said that an application for the project had been made to the Highways Department a year ago on 22nd January 2016, and that the approval process had begun. He pointed out that the detailed project had been approved last August,.
Mayor Benli said that the common targets were to provide more services to the public, stating that the Nicosia-Güzelyurt main road and Demir Sokak road project will solve the problem of traffic congestion. He noted that the underpass project project was to be implemented in January 2017.
Benli expressed his sadness and dismay at the sudden stoppage by the Highways Department. The mayor said that everyone was surprised by the move, that everyone trusted the municipality, which was trying to improve conditions for the whole community. The project was intended to provide access to Güzelyurt without the need to use the Gönyeli roundabout.
Yeni Duzen cites no reason for the sudden halt to work on the project.
