South Cyprus Defence Minister, Photis Photiou has said emphatically that the South will continue with its energy plans despite, “Turkey’s provocations and blackmailing practices.”
He added that the South has sovereign rights in energy related matters and Nicosia will not abolish them.
Ankara made its objections known when Nicosia launched its exploration activities, in September 2011.
The government of South Cyprus protested to the UN and the EU Turkey’s moves, saying it has a sovereign right to exploit its natural resources.
Last week, the Turkish Minister of Energy Taner Yildiz announced that Turkey will search for gas and oil in the exclusive economic zone claimed by South Cyprus, which zone Turkey hotly disputes.
