A team of experts from the Middle East Technical University yesterday published their initial findings on the environmental impact of the oil spill at Kalecik.
The director of the Institute of Marine Sciences Professor Ahmet Kideys said that his team had been analysing conditions and found major issues.
His team have determined that the effects of the oil spill have been felt 15 kilometres away.
Also that within one kilometre of the central zone, all living animals and plants had been wiped out.
Samples within the 15 kilometre zone had been taken for further analysis. More work would be required to determine how long the environment would take to recover from this disaster he said.
