The Cyprus talks are scheduled to restart today with Cypriot negotiators Ozdil Nami and Andreas Mavroyiannis meeting in the UN buffer zone.
The UN-led negotiations in Mont Pèlerin came to a halt last month, after the two community leaders Mustafa Akinci and Nicos Anastasiades, were unable to agree on territorial adjustments.
Following a dinner meeting with the UN Special Advisor Espen Barth Eide last week, both leaders agreed to resume negotiations. Their negotiators are tasked with continuing meetings to resolve outstanding issues. The two community leaders will also meet as required.
Their negotiators will discuss the agenda and schedule meetings in the presence of UN Deputy Special Advisor Elizabeth Spehar, who is deputising for Espen Barth Eide while he is in Ankara, CNA reports.
Eide is meeting with Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu and will return to the island this evening.
Reportedly, no meetings between Akinci and Anastasiades have been confirmed for this week.
However, they have decided that they will meet in Geneva on 9th January, 2017. On 11th January they will present their respective maps. Following which, on 12th January, a Cyprus Conference will be convened with the inclusion of the guarantor powers – Greece, Turkey and the UK. Other relevant parties will be invited as needed.
