The two community leader began their second meeting on the Cyprus negotiations at 10 am today.
All six chapters including governance, EU affairs, properties, territories, guarantees and security, have yet to be fully completed.
Among today’s topics was the thorny issue of territory. A report by Greek Cypriot daily Phileleftheros claims that President Akinci is hesitant to tackle the issue for fear of censure from his coalition government. Meanwhile, the South is keen to resolve the problem.
Today’s discussions will include the criteria for territory, without the inclusion of maps or population figures. These will be left to the end. However, the expectation is that decisions will be made on how much territory and how many enclave communities will be returned to Greek Cypriot control.
Subjects such as authority over coastlines, populated areas, sites of cultural or religious significance and the productivity of some areas will be included.
It is said that the Greek Cypriot side is eyeing the Karpaz region, the Maronite communities, monuments and monasteries. While the Turkish Cypriots are interested in Lefke, Louroujina/Akıncılar, and certain communities in Paphos.
It is hoped that by 14th September, sufficient progress will be made in time for the start of the United Nations General Assembly.
