Presidents Mustafa Akinci and Nicos Anastasiades met this morning to continue the Cyprus negotiations. This was  the penultimate meeting before the month’s end.

After their previous meeting last week, President Anastasiades had said that significant progress had been made on the topics of judicial, legislative and executive powers within the framework of the solution.

Noting that while there were very few issues outstanding on judicial and legislative powers, despite notable progress, there are some substantive matters still unresolved regarding executive power.

The two leaders are scheduled to meet again on 29th July.

On Monday, Espen Barth Eide, the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser on Cyprus, who was in New York to brief the Security Council, together with Special Representative Elizabeth Spehar, said that “the window for a solution in Cyprus remains open but it will definitely not remain open for ever”.

He added that “in a week from now we will at least have the preliminary discussion on issues which have not been touched upon till now, including territory, security and guarantees”.

Eide said he believed that both leaders will want to make the most out of the negotiations August and September prior to the UN General Assembly, which will be held in September.
