A 52-year-old woman in North Cyprus has been diagnosed with swine flu, TAK news agency reported on Friday.
The woman, who is now in intensive care, was diagnosed on 12 January.
Health authorities were only notified three days later. However, they have urged the public not to panic as all safety measures are in place.
On Monday, Turkish daily Zaman reported that following the death of four more people in Istanbul, Diyarbakir and Kirsehir from the H1N1 virus (swine flu), over the previous weekend, the number of people in Turkey who have died from the infection has risen to 19 according to the mainland Turkish authorities.
Turkey’s Ministry of Health admits that swine flu cases are on the rise as a seasonal occurrence, it maintains that the situation does not amount to an epidemic. Experts state that no epidemic is expected and that the best way to tackle the disease is for individuals to practice good personal hygiene.
The ministry also highlighted the importance of going to a doctor during the early stages of swine flu, which will make the sufferer feel as though they are suffering from a particularly powerful strain of influenza that they cannot recover from.
Swine flu is highly infectious. The symptoms of swine flu are similar to most influenza infections and include a sore throat, headache, body aches, runny nose, coughing, difficulty breathing, vomiting, diarrhea and a high fever.
