President Nicos Anastasiades and President Mustafa Akinci will meet this evening to continue their negotiations on the Cyprus problem.
During the meeting, due to take place at 6pm, Anastasiades is expected to raise the recent comments made by Akinci on majorities, and on permanent EU derogations for the Turkish Cypriot side.
South Cyprus government spokesman Nikos Christodoulides has said that their meetings will become more frequent from November onwards. In particular, both sides will be able to make evaluations on their progress after the Turkish elections to be held on 1st November.
Christodoulides said that negotiations are at a critical point and Anastasiades is expected to talk to Akinci about statements he made regarding exceptions from the European acquis communautaire. Akinci said last week, that permanent derogations from the acquis should be viewed as a “natural right” for the Turkish Cypriots instead of a restriction to the rights of Greek Cypriots or other EU nationals.
As such, President Anastasiades is expected to make it clear that the Greek Cypriot side will not accept guaranteed majorities, or exceptions from the EU acquis, the spokesman said.
