Turkish Cypriot member of the Committee on Missing Persons (CMP) Murat Soysal, has said that so far, no human remains have been found during their excavations in the area behind the Central Prison in North Nicosia. He added that they estimate that they will have a result within a few weeks. He noted that this is a large area and that they are working to find the remains of 40-50 Greek Cypriots, after they received information that they had been buried there in 1974.
“The excavations are continuing and we believe that we will achieve a result”, Soysal said, adding that there will be excavations in two sites and that they are only working on one site at the moment. Work on the other one is yet to begin. He said that the excavation sites, with the permission of the Turkish army, have been randomly chosen and described as positive the fact that the area is a military zone because “the geographical structure of the area has not changed very much and this increases the chances of getting a result”.
Meanwhile, Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Kibris Gazetesi’ reports that Soysal said that excavations are currently being carried out at nine different locations. He noted that the remains of two persons were found on Thursday in Karaoglanoglu (Agios Georgios) in Kyrenia district, adding that it is believed that these are the remains of two Turkish Cypriots missing since 1963. He said that they are also working in Lapta (Lapithos) and in Famagusta where the remains of a Greek Cypriot and a Greek Cypriot woman were found. He added that they are carrying out excavations in the areas of Aradippou and Koutrafas villages in the south of the island.
Soysal referred also to other places in which the CMP is working and called on people who have any information about burial sites to contact the Committee.
