UNFICYP has carried out a mine clearing operation today in the Mammari region south of Alaykoy.
Officials from UNFICYP announced that after confidence building measures had been initiated by both community leaders regarding mine clearing, 25 out of 28 mine fields had been cleared.
They said that from 2001-2011 around 27,000 mines had been cleared and 11 million Euros had been spent on the task. Cambodian experts from UNIFIL lead the mine clearance operation.
UNFICYP Commander General Kristin Lund told a press conference that discussions with officials regarding mine clearing in the North were on-going and work would begin next month.
