President Akinci’s spokesman Baris Burcu has said that discussions regarding the Derinya border crossing route with the Turkish army, the Ministry of the Interior and the district officer are ongoing.
According to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) disagreement exists on the route through the Derinya crossing. The opening of the crossing had been agreed between President Anastasiades and President Mustafa Akinci within the framework of confidence building measures.
Burcu said that they are “discussing alternatives” and noted that as a result of their talks held in consultation with the Turkish army, for security reasons, another point for crossing is indicated because there are mines located at the existing crossing.
The proposal for opening a crossing point 700-750 meters in the west of the existing one had reportedly been submitted to President Akinci who conveyed this proposal to his Greek Cypriot interlocutors.
Meanwhile, in statements to Turkish Cypriot daily ‘Kibris Postasi’, Okan Dagli, member of the Famagusta Initiative, said that they want the Derinya crossing point opened as soon as possible. He noted that there is no need for another road and that it would be easier to open the crossing point by altering the existing road. “Political will is needed for this”, he added.
