Cyprus negotiators Andreas Mavroyiannis and Ozdil Nami are scheduled to resume their meetings on Tuesday before the two community leaders hold their first meeting on 1st September, after the summer break.

CNA reports that the negotiators will be meeting daily; their main task will be to prepare for the next leaders’ meeting.

Prior to the August break, the negotiators had meetings with the technical committees for the economy, property and EU matters.

UN Special Adviser Espen Barth Eide will be in Cyprus to attend the leaders’ meeting.

According to today’s reports by Greek Cypriot daily ‘Phileleftheros’, it has been suggested that Turkey acts as guarantor for the Turkish Cypriot side alone. Another suggestion from third parties, in a bid to facilitate future talks, talks about an end date, when Turkey has to give up any rights to ‘intervene’ in Cyprus in its role as a guarantor.

Others are keen to include NATO in any possible settlement and to keep the Turkish military on Cyprus but only under the umbrella of NATO which is reportedly highly supportive of a settlement reached between the two communities.

Reports from the Greek Cypriot side suggest opposition party AKEL would block any deal involving NATO with regards to security matters, thus prompting President Anastasiades to push for guarantees to be scrapped completely and for any possible solution to be safeguarded under the umbrella of the EU or the UN Security Council.
