Several more cultural events are in the pipeline, approved by both Cypriot presidents as confidence building measures.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency on Wednesday, Androulla Vassiliou, co-chair of the committee, said Tuesday’s musical evening at Othello’s Tower, attended by both leaders, had been a great success.
A cultural event at ancient Salamis, a conference with Europa Nostra and performances by Turkish Cypriot soloists with the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra are being planned as the next bi-communal cultural projects to be organised by the Technical Committee on Cultural Heritage.
“This fills us with great optimism because we believe that people share our view that through cultural cooperation and joint events we can build a new culture of peace and cooperation between the two communities,” Mrs. Vassiliou said.
She stressed the importance of preparing the ground in the event of a solution being found, that could be accepted by both communities.
The next cultural event at Salamis in the North could take place as soon as next week.
Vassiliou also said that a major conference had been scheduled for late October with the European organisation Europa Nostra, to discuss the value of cultural heritage.
The third event, she said, would be a concert by the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra with the participation of soloists from the Turkish Cypriot community.
