UN Secretary-General Special Adviser for Cyprus Espen Barth Eide has welcomed the reappointment of Pieter van Nuffel (above) as the EU Commission President Jean Claude Juncker’s Personal Representative for the Cyprus talks.
The reappointment of van Nuffel was announced on Thursday by Juncker who is visiting Cyprus.
“I welcome the reappointment of Pieter van Nuffel as Personal Representative of Juncker. I look forward to continued cooperation,” Eide wrote in his personal account on Twitter.
The President of the European Commission, announced during a press conference, that the EU will be there when it comes to the solution.
“I am delighted to announce the re-appointment of Pieter Van Nuffel as my Personal Representative in the Cyprus settlement negotiations. He will be reporting personally to me. He will assist the parties in the settlement talks with technical and legal expertise and will ensure that any solution will be compatible with European law and European values”, Jean Claude Junker said.
Van Nuffel’s duties will include continuing to provide legal and practical advice to the UN Good Offices Mission on EU-related matters and acting as a liaison between the UN Good Offices Mission and the European Commission.
