Turkish President Recep Tayyip Edogan has said that Turkey needs a coalition government that is able to solve the problems of the day and build the future.
Erdogan had commissioned Justice and Development Party (AKP) Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu to form a new government on 9th July, more than a month after the 7th June general elections that saw the AKP lose its parliamentary majority.
Speaking at an iftar dinner organized by Istanbul University’s theology faculty late 10th July, Erdogan wished Davutoglu success. “My wish is that a new government will be formed in line with the sensitivities of conditions for Turkey today,” he said.
“Turkey needs today a coalition government that asserts its will for the solution of current problems and for building the future, instead of debating its past,” Erdogan added.
If political parties fail reach a compromise, the Turkish President noted, the problem could be resolved with an early election. This would be an unprecedented event.
Some observers have speculated that Erdogan would prefer an early election in the hope that the AKP would gain a majority, rather than share power with other political parties.
