Vehicles numbers in the TRNC have been increased by 60% in the last ten years. According to the police’s Director of Traffic, Ahmet Beserler, there are over 200,000 vehicles in the North which relates to the increasing number of fatal traffic accidents.
Beserler said that there are not enough police officers per capita in the TRNC. Traffic police only number 220, which is only one police officer for every thousand persons in the North. He noted that in the UK, there is one officer for every 500 people.
