UN Special Adviser Espen Barth Eide was due in Brussels on Wednesday to discuss developments in Cyprus with President of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker, Enlargement Commissioner Johannes Hahn and President of the European Parliament, Martin Schulz, reports say.
Eide and Schulz are due to hold a joint news conference in the afternoon, the Cyprus News Agency said.
The Greek Cypriot side has long been seeking more EU involvement in the negotiations process but the Turkish Cypriot side has been resisting as they feel the fact that Cyprus is a member state would give the Greek Cypriots an unfair advantage in the talks.
Juncker had informed President Nicos Anastasiades that Europe was seeking to play a big role now that talks had resumed on the island when the two men at the recent Eastern Partnership Business Forum in the Latvian capital of Riga.
Eide has so far welcomed any possible intervention from Brussels while recently-elected Turkish Cypriot President Mustafa Akinci is also said to have a positive view of EU involvement.
