The Cyprus talks which were halted last October, have resumed this morning.

President Mustafa Akinci arrived first at the UN buffer zone in Nicosia, with recently appointed negotiator Ozdil Nami, Foreign Ministry under-secretary Erhan Ercin and spokesperson Burcu Baris. President Nicos Anastasiades and his delegation arrived shortly after 10am. Both presidents were greeted by the UN Secretary-General’s Special Advisor on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide and UN Special Representative Lisa Buttenheim.

The two presidents first met informally at a dinner hosted by Eide on Monday.

Reports have said that today, Anastasiades and Akinci will discuss the procedure and structure of the talks, their negotiators’ mandate, and the frequency of meetings.

The first day of the negotiations is being followed by many journalists. Interest in the resumption of the talks is high following the recent election of strongly pro-solution Mustafa Akinci to the TRNC presidency.
