It has been reported that following President Ankinci’s meeting with Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu and Turkish Foreign Minister Cavusoglu in Ankara yesterday, there has been unanimous agreement that President Akinci begins the process for introducing Confidence Building Measures (CBMs) in the Cyprus negotiations.

The approach towards the Cyprus talks was one of the topics discussed between top officials in Ankara yesterday. It was agreed that the comprehensive talks must be on solid ground before any steps are taken on the CBMs package which includes the opening of Varosha. It was underlined, however, that the CBMs must not affect the comprehensive settlement process which was the priority of the negotiations.

The issue of Varosha came onto the agenda when US Vice President Biden visited the island last May.

During yesterday’s meetings in Ankara, there was strong support for the idea that technical delegations visit Varosha.
