Turkey’s undersea water pipeline project which connects the mainland with North Cyprus, is using illegally expropriated land belonging to Greek Cypriot refugees, Greek Cypriot Minister of Foreign Affairs Ioannis Kasoulides has said. The issue will be raised during the Cyprus negotiations which are expected to resume this month, he warned.
Kasoulides claims that Ankara’s water policy in the areas it has militarily occupied since 1974 is part of its wider geo-strategic plans in the Eastern Mediterranean. It is clear, he said, that Ankara aims to unify the “occupied areas” with Turkey.
He also referred to government efforts, now and during the previous administration, to cancel the project.
The South’s foreign minister added that the current government had informed the UN in writing more than a year ago, but received no reply, noting that the UN do not reply to such letters.
The pipeline which will transport water from Turkey via undersea pipeline to North Cyprus is expected to be fully operational by the end of the year.
