A Cypriot registered airline company which is planning to operate flights to and from Europe, has officially requested a Certificate of Airworthiness from the Cyprus Civil Aviation board.
Greek Cypriot daily ‘Phleleftheros’ reports that ‘Cobalt Air’ has set up offices in South Cyprus and is looking to become the South’s ‘unofficial’ flag carrier since the demise of Cyprus Airways.
According to the newspaper, the company intends to promote South Cyprus by branding some of its aircraft with name such as ‘Visit Cyprus’. It is said that the relative authorities, including the Greek Cypriot Ministry of Communications and Works are working closely with the airline company.
The new airline aims to be operating a fleet of between seven and ten aircraft by early next year.
‘Cobalt Air’ which has only one Cypriot national on its board had previously said that it was not interested in acquiring some of the assets of the defunct Cyprus Airways. Nor did it want to use the name Cyprus Airways or its emblem.
Founder of Airlogical Consulting Group, Australian Peter Kelly is heading the project. He is considered to be a very experienced aviation and travel sector operator by the aviation world. Kelly was recently a senior executive with ‘Quantas Airways’ at its Sydney head office.
The number two at ‘Cobalt Air’ is Andrew Pattison who has in the past held senior positions at Cathay Pacific Airways, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic Airways.
