The CEO of Russian Sberbank and former Economy, Development and Trade Minister German Gref, has visited the TRNC to attend a Directors’ meeting held by Turkey’s Denizbank of which it is a shareholder.
The meeting, which lasted for three days, was held at the Kaya Artemis Hotel in North Cyprus.
Gref who attended the last day of the meeting, postponed the date of his arrival several times, in order to avoid possible tension and reactions by the Greek Cypriot side against any potential business ventures being launched in the North.
The Russian CEO finally arrived on the island with his private jet landing in Larnaca and then travelled across the border to the TRNC where he was welcomed by the general director of Deniz Bank and the director and other members of the Kaya Artemis Hotel’s administration board.
Reportedly, according to hotel director Nihat Berkan, Gref had told him that he considered that North Cyprus would become one of the most important tourist destinations in the near future.
Sberbank Rossii is a shareholder-owned bank with the Russian government in the majority, headquartered in Moscow. As of 2012 it was the largest bank in Russia and Eastern Europe, and the third largest in Europe.
