The European Commission has agreed to release 2 million euros to contribute to the work of the Committee on Missing Persons in Cyprus (CMP).

This is the seventh payment signed in agreement with the United Nations Development Programme, with a further 600,000 euros pending.

“These additional funds underline the strong commitment of the European Union to continue to support the work of the CMP. By addressing the painful legacy of the past, the work of the CMP contributes to the process of rapprochement and reconciliation between both Cypriot communities,” a statement from the Commission said.

The EU Commission has been the main contributors to the CMP with the latest funding covering the costs of bi-communal scientific teams at all stages of the work. The funds will contribute to the costs of investigations, excavations, exhumations, DNA analysis, return of missing persons; as well as events, training and awareness-raising to further promote confidence building.

The highest rate of identifications ever made was in 2014, when the remains of 157 missing persons were returned to their families. In total, the remains of 573 missing persons have been identified and returned to their families, since work began in 2006.

Overall, EU funding for the CMP has amounted to 14.7 million euros.
