Larnaca could easily have been lost to the Turkish military during the July 1974 peace keeping mission, President Dervis Eroglu has said.
In an interview with CNN Turk on Monday, the president was talking about the ghost town of Varosha/Maras and wanted to make the point that the Cyprus problem must be solved across the board, without focusing on the subject of returning the town as if it was a separate issue.
“My goal is not the solution of the issue of Varosha (Famagusta). Varosha is only on aspect of the territorial problem and the Turkish Cypriot side is ready to discuss all aspects when the chapter of the territory opens after the resumption of the peace process,” Eroglu said.
The president also remained adamant that Turkey’s guarantees were essential even if a settlement of the Cyprus problem is achieved.
