UN Secretary-General Special Advisor on Cyprus Espen Barth Eide, will be meeting with the members of the UN Security Council and the UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on 26th January to discuss the Cyprus problem.
Eide will also meet with the Permanent Representatives of Cyprus, Greece, Turkey and a representative of the Turkish Cypriots.
Meanwhile, according to reliable sources the resolution for the extension for six more months of UNFICYP’s (UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus) mandate, drafted by Great Britain, is similar to the one adopted in July.
Greek Cypriot negotiator in the Cyprus talks Andreas Mavroyiannis is expected in New York to hold contacts with the UN Secretariat and members of the UN Security Council. The Greek Permanent Representation is also holding contacts with UN officials.
According to the same sources, during their contacts the Cypriot and Greek delegations will stress that it is necessary for the UN to clearly and objectively outline the reasons for the state of affairs as regards the Cyprus issue.
Last week, the South Cyprus government expressed great disappointment and dissatisfaction on the content of the UN Secretary General’s report on the activities of the United Nations in Cyprus covering the period from 21st June 2014 until 15th December 2014 and has made written and verbal representations at the highest level.
The government said that the report made no special reference to the continued violations of the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus, an independent and sovereign state, member of the UN contrary to international law and the UN Charter and the UN Convention on the Law of the Seas. In addition, the government stressed that the report does not make any reference to Turkey’s illegal seismic activity in [South] Cyprus’ EEZ through its vessel ‘Barbaros’, which was accompanied by Turkish warships.
“The lack of clear reference to what caused the negotiations to be suspended, a little before the start of the most critical phase of the negotiating procedure that began last February with the adoption of the joint declaration, is debatable and does not help in solving the crisis created by Turkey”, Government Spokesman Nikos Christodoulides has said.
Greek Cypriot President Nicos Anastasiades abandoned the Cyprus negotiations after Turkey issued a NAVTEX (notice to mariners), last October, as Turkish seismic research vessel “Barbaros” would begin operations in the South’s exclusive economic zone.
Despite repeated calls for the withdrawal of “Barbaros”, Ankara announced recently the NAVTEX`s extension until 6th April, 2015.
