Prime Minister and Republican Turkish Party (CTP) leader Ozkan Yorgancıoğlu’s support for Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu two-state solution statements disrespects the will of the Turkish Cypriots, Izzet Izcan (above) chairman of the United Cyprus Party (BKP) says, adding that most Turkish Cypriots want an immediate federal solution, ‘Kibris Postasi’ reports.
Izcan stated that Yorgancıoğlu’s statements reflect President Dervis Eroğlu’s attitude and Davutoğlu’s statements which advocate a discriminatory two-state solution. “With frigates sent to the coast off Cyprus and the “power-game” approach, Davutoğlu is kindling nationalism and bringing two-state politics into the forefront. On the other hand, Eroğlu, holding district meetings, under the guise of informing the people, is using false, provocative expressions, scaring the people and provoking them into supporting permanent division in Cyprus”, Izcan stated.
Izcan noted that even if the negotiations were to resume, given the current positions of both sides, there is no possibility for a solution, adding that for a comprehensive and early solution, there is a need for a new understanding and a new phase. “The new negotiation period should be one where steps are taken based on UN parameters, supported by Confidence Building Measures,” said Izcan, calling on the international community to give active support for a new phase in the negotiations.
