Italy has made representations to Ankara over Turkey’s activities offshore in [South] Cyprus’ exclusive economic zone (EEZ), reliable sources told CNA, ‘Philenews’ reports.
The same sources say that Italy is “particularly disturbed” by the issuing of the “illegal” Turkish NAVTEX directive covering seismic surveys by the Turkish research vessel ‘Barbaros Hayrettin Pasha’ in areas in the South’s EEZ.
The Turkish NAVTEX violates the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus, the report adds, but also the rights of the Italian-Korean energy consortium Eni-Kogas whose drill ship Saipem 10000 began its first testing for hydrocarbon reserves in [South] Cyprus’ EEZ in September following an agreement with the government.
President Anastasiades will raise the issue of Turkish provocations during his meetings with foreign leaders on the sidelines of the 10th Asia-Europe Summit (ASEM) which is taking place in Milan.
According to sources, Anastasiades will meet, among others, with the President of the European Council and the Italian Prime Minister, whose country currently presides over the EU Council.
