A man who escaped custody following a sentence of 8 years imprisonment for malicious wounding in 2009 has been arrested in the TRNC.
Umit Goktas was sentenced four years ago, however he escaped and was not seen again until he was arrested in the TRNC last week.
Goktas was on the “most wanted” list issued by Turkey but it has been established that he was actually living in the TRNC for some time and also had a work permit.
He appeared at Nicosia court yesterday where the judge ordered that he be held for up to 30 days while police determine how he managed to live in the TRNC without detection.
At the end of their investigations, Goktas will be returned to Turkey to serve his sentence.
