Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu will become the new prime minister and leader of the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party), outgoing Turkish President Abdullah Gül predicts, Turkish daily ‘Zaman’ reports.
Gül told reporters during his farewell reception for civil society representatives that he believes Davutoğlu (pictured right) will become the ruling party’s new leader and wished him success. He added that he had helped the foreign minister climb both state and political ranks.
Gül also noted that he favours a parliamentary system – remarks that contradict Turkish Prime Minister and President-elect Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s declared intention to move government to the presidential system.
Gül said that he has recently witnessed a lot of disrespectful behaviour by some people within the AK Party. Ruling out any upheavals within ruling party, Gül said that he will definitely be returning to politics and that he continued to support the AK party which he founded.
